Online Series: An Introduction to the Development of Jazz in France

Known for its culture that values equality and freedom, France has a rich history in developing the jazz genre over the years, which has been traced back in this video from the 1920s with the all-round jazz performer Josephine Baker being a representative of pioneers, to the modern age where French-based musician Ibrahim Maalouf became an internationally renowned jazz star. Selected footages and recordings help illustrate and enhance your understanding of the social and cultural factors that contributed to the evolvement and characteristics of this genre. Enjoy also performances of significant works such as “All of Me” in the version by Django Reinhardt, the father of Gypsy jazz, and “Mirage”, an original composition by jazz rock/fusion violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, which provide a fascinating glimpse of the multicultural sounds resulted from the diversity and inclusive culture rooted in French jazz.

Video in Cantonese, with Chinese and English subtitles.

Video will be released in Mid-May, stay tuned.
