Artist Residency (Circus) Sharing Session

In this four-day Hong Kong residency, acrobats from Compagnie XY and local artists exchange and collaborate through co-experiencing arts-making in the areas of dance, lion dance, martial arts, and circus.

During the residency, the company visits various local arts companies and schools to conduct studio-based research, masterclasses, and workshops. As the concluding event for the residency, the French and local artists will discuss the cultural exchange and their own specialised areas in performing arts.

This sharing session invites four acrobats from Compagnie XY, along with art groups that take part in the exchange activities, including Rare Circus, Hong Kong Circus, Kwok's Kung Fu & Dragon Lion dance Team and Flipz Studio, to discuss the cultural exchange, as well as their own experience in performing arts.

Conducted in French, English, and Cantonese, supplemented by English.

Compagnie XY

For 17 years, Compagnie XY has been investigating and exploring the language of acrobatics through the practice of lifts. While relying on the fundamentals of this circus technique, this collective of artists keeps playing with the codes, rhythms and forms of acrobatics to put them back at the very heart of the artistic gesture.

Since then, the company has chosen to work in large numbers in order to multiply possibilities and to enlarge its field of research. This choice also reflects an artistic approach that aims to question the concepts of mass, of the 'audience' and their interactions in the same space-time. Beyond that, it remains a matter of questioning the relationship of an individual to a group or within a given social setting.

Through this approach, Cie XY has also chosen to be a true collective, sharing the expertise and ideas of each individual and adopting a collegial creative process. This constant desire to be part of a process of transmission and sharing in a non-hierarchical framework has a strong impact on daily work and becomes a direct component of the artistic forms that are produced. In this spirit, the team has chosen to turn towards the public through the collective creation of large-scale forms for the theatre, public spaces or any places that allow frontal or circular performances.

Rare Circus

'Rare' means we think that we are not good and not experience enough in our performance. However, it also means that we have much more space to improve as well as have a chance to discover personal capabilities.

Rare Circus promotes a variety of Circus Arts to the public by organising different events such as live performances, training workshops, experience sharing, juggling competitions and Art Camp. We aim to enhance the local Circus Arts level and increase public awareness of Circus Arts in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Circus

By harmonising contemporary circus, visual arts, theatre and dance, Hong Kong Circus is a pioneering performing arts group. Our mission is to establish a circus platform to connect artists, practitioners and circus lovers of the city. Through performances, workshops and training programmes, we strive to enrich the appreciation and prompt the development of contemporary circus in Hong Kong.

Ever since its establishment in 2012, Hong Kong Circus has been devoted to conducting outreach activities that are fun and educational, welcoming audiences of all ages to participate.

Kwok's Kung Fu & Dragon Lion Dance Team

In 1949, Kwok Wing Cheong began to practice martial arts in Hong Kong. He studied Kung Fu, northern and southern lion dance skills. Master Kwok also strives for opportunities to gain exposure aboard. He often goes to Southeast Asia to perform Chinese martial arts and compete in competitions. Master Kwok's enthusiasm and craftsmanship are widely recognized and are also highly respected overseas. Kwok and his son, Kwok Man Lung have been invited to Japan to perform martial arts and lion dance sixteen times since 1986.

In 1989, Kwok Man Lung decided to take over the coaching reins from his father and revitalize the league. Master Man Lung believes that the auxiliary sport of dragon and lion dance has independently developed into a specialized sport integrating martial arts, sports, art and entertainment. He hopes that the art of dragon and lion dance will eventually become a specialized performing art in Hong Kong.

Flipz Studio

Flipz was founded in 2008 as the first performance team in Hong Kong that has integrated gymnastics skills with dancing movements.

In addition, we have participated in different stage performances in Hong Kong, such as the Hong Kong Film Awards. Furthermore, we have also been performing in cooperation with different brands and organizations.

The performance that incorporates gymnastic elements into dance is called Acrodance (also known as Acrobatic dance), which is a relatively new type of dance in recent years.

Our studio was established in 2018 to promote gymnastics and acrobatic dance. Our current coaching team consists of members from the Hong Kong gymnastics team who have won championships in local competitions in competitive gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. Besides, we are also internationally recognized with professional qualifications as gymnastics coaches and referees.
