Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was one of the most important and influential French composers of the 20th century, a composer who sought to capture in music both the beauty of the nature and the spiritual secrets of Roman Catholic mysticism. The style he created in a compositional career that lasted more than six decades drawing on everything from bird song to Indian and Balinese rhythmic modes, as well as more conventional forms of Western chromaticism and Serial techniques. To commemorate the 110th anniversary of Messiaen’s birth, some of his solo piano works from different periods (Huit préludes, Petites Esquisses d’oiseaux, Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus etc.) will be presented.
