The critic Charlotte Jansen wrote about Niki de Saint-Phalle: “The French-born, American-raised artist is one of the most significant female and feminist artists of the 20th century, and one of the few to receive recognition in the male-dominated art world during her lifetime“. Niki de SaintPhalle’s artistic career is remarkable, her achievements despite the painful circumstances of her childhood and against the odds of her times professionally, are inspiring. While two of her early two-dimensional works were included in the School of Nice exhibition, the breadth of her work expands far beyond these examples.

She is most famous for the Nanas, light-hearted, whimsical, colorful, large-scale sculptures of animals, monsters, and female figures. Several of her most iconic works from this series are traveling to Shanghai an Beijing to be exhibited at the Power Station of Art and the Today art Museum respectively.

Niki’s life work was the Tarot Garden in Tuscany and works in the same marvelous and fantastic vein are included in the exhibition.

Paintings and reliefs are included to show how her creativity was expressed through a variety of media. She also designed wonderful lithographs, sometimes used for campaign for health or for Jazz festivals for instance. These works also give a glimpse into the vivid cultural life of France.

It is a very playful and whimsical artwork list that can rejoice audiences of all ages. The exhibition of large sculptures in an outdoor promenade leading to the Shatin Town Hall Exhibition Gallery with the connection to the MTR and the mall will draw much larger audiences and all passer-by can enjoy the art.
