Collectors’ Cabinets: Discovering the World through Objects of Wonder

Cabinets of Curiosities – From the Natural Sciences to the Art of Nature

12 June (Tue) 4:00pm- 6:00pm

Room 1301, Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building, City University of Hong Kong

Since the Renaissance, both cabinet rooms and cabinet furniture presented miraculous collections of artefacts and scientific instruments, besides specimens of flora and fauna. This lecture presents some of the most important and opulent Kunstkammer cabinets, custom-built to preserve and display, as well as to surprise and engage, and to demonstrate a collector’s personal interests and worldly connections and outreach. Historic masterpieces, these cabinets incorporated the finest materials and rarest naturalia, and they were engineered by the most talented artists for elite collectors.
