One of the great masters of the piano, whose extraordinary career spanning over 30 years has seen him perform at the world’s most prestigious venues with top orchestras, French pianist Jean-Marc Luisada first came to fame for his achievement at the 1985 Chopin Competition, and is to this day celebrated for his ability to conjure a “range of musical colours and textures in virtuosic passages and dreamy landscapes” (Classic FM).
Luisada will be making his long-overdue Hong Kong début under Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s invitation for its season-opening concert with Music Director Christoph Poppen on 18 April. Mozart’s luminous and spirited Piano Concerto No 9, “Jeunehomme” will be the centrepiece of the evening of orchestral splendour, while a fine selection of classics by Chopin, Haydn and Debussy will feature in Luisada’s solo recital the day after (19 April).

A laureate of the Dino Ciani Piano Competition in 1983 and International Chopin Piano Competition in 1985, Jean-Marc Luisada has had an extraordinary concert career spanning more than 30 years. He plays in prestigious venues around the world, such as Wigmore Hall in London, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, Salle Pleyel and Salle Gaveau in Paris, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Tonhalle in Zürich, BOZAR in Brussels, Herkulessaal in Munich and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, as well as at renowned festivals such as Festival Chopin in Paris, Festival International de Piano de la Roque d’Anthéron, Festival International de Musique Besançon Franche-Comté, La Folle Journée de Nantes, Festival Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André, La Grange aux Pianos etc.
Luisada has performed with such illustrious conductors as Charles Dutoit, Ádám Fischer, Theodor Guschlbauer, Eliahu Inbal, Emmanuel Krivine, Marek Janowski, Yehudi Menuhin, Michel Plasson and Michael Tilson Thomas, with the London Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.
In chamber music, Luisada surrounds himself with Gary Hoffman, Pierre Amoyal, Philippe Bernold, and the Talich, Modigliani and Fine Arts quartets.
Luisada has recorded several discs for Deutsche Grammophon and Sony (RCA), in particular Chopin’s waltzes, mazurkas and Piano Concerto No 1 in E minor in its original version with the Talich Quartet and double bassist Benjamin Berlioz; Granados’ Goyescas, Poulenc’s L’Histoire de Babar, Le Petit Éléphant with Jeanne Moreau, and the album Feu Sacré with Macha Méril. A disc dedicated to Schumann, rewarded with a CHOC Classica and rave reviews, preceded a recording of Schubert’s Piano Sonata in C, D840 and in B-flat, D960, which marked the start of a collaboration with the La Dolce Volta label. His latest album Au Cinéma Ce Soir, with works by Rota, Mahler, Mozart, Brahms, Joplin and Chopin, pays homage to his parents, and to the cinema masterpieces which marked his existence and nourished his life as an artist.
Alongside his concert activity, Luisada teaches at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He was bestowed the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres medal by the French Ministry of Culture.
Luisada studied piano at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, where in 1977 he won the First Prize in Dominique Merlet’s piano class, and in 1978 the First Prize in Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux’s chamber music class. He also received advice from great masters such as Denyse Rivière, Marcel Ciampi, Paul Badura-Skoda, Vlado Perlemuter etc.
