Vocabulary of Need – Yuval Pick
Vocabulary of Need is a dance piece confronting with the masterpiece in the history of music, Bach’s Partita in D minor (BWV 1004). Yuval Pick, the contemporary artist and choreographer, intends to offer the dancers and the audience a spiritual encounter with the music by the intensified dance movements, working with 9 dancers, conversing with the music piece.

Since the end of the 90s, Yuval Pick has created more than twenty choreographic pieces. Their writing is based on a “matrix”, or method, called Practice, which is both a philosophy of the body and a set techniques and experiences. Yuval Pick acknowledges that Practice method can contribute to the initial and the ongoing training of today’s dancer; it can expand their physical skills and creative potential.
But how concretely? Through the evocation of vegetal, animal or playful images, answers Yuval Pick, through precise exercises on the inner spiral, the rotation from the center to the periphery and the transfer of weight, which reinforce the way the dancer finds in each movement its organic and intimate depth, nurtures his or her “here and now” action, makes it visible and perceptible.
