Gisèle Tchitchiama's show Luminaria derives its title from the Latin 'luminaria', light, luminare, and star.
It frames a quest for illumination through encounters with light, fragility, and the ephemeral.
Tchitchiama's multiple identities – French, African, woman, wife, mother, daughter – are woven into her interrogations.
Presence and absence are at the heart of her conversations, as are journeys into inner and outer landscapes.
Biography
Gisèle Tchitchiama's artistic practice is best known for investigating the allure of freedom in her pictorial and abstract universe, giving it form by examining the relationship between colour and brushstroke. Tchitchiama continually tries to clarify the transcendence of identity, an elegant fluidity in which a new sense of peace and gentleness is created.
A French artist, Tchitchiama concentrates on employing a powerfully evocative dreamscape, using distinctive strokes of paint that are like shadows of both force and lightness, creating a poetry between her profound use of colours, the material used, and the act of creating. Tchitchiama invites us to take a moment to enter our personal cosmos of light and intimacy with oneself, inspiring those who engage with her work to rediscover the beauty of humanity within oneself.
Acrylic and watercolour inform Tchitchiama’s work in a way that dictates a universal language of our minds. Often created without any anecdotal or narrative aspect, Tchitchama’s work encompasses the essence of expression, purity, and spirituality.
Inspired by much of Bach, Verlaine, and T.S Elliot’s work, Tchitchiama reifies the worlds of these great intellectuals into a new space for viewers to dwell and renew their minds.
Artist Talk and Guided Tour
6 May 2023 (Sat) | 2 – 3:30pm
In conjunction with her exhibition, Gisèle Tchitchiama invites HART Haus Studio artists to join her for a conversation around the theme Luminaria.
The conversation will tease out how the idea of Luminaria resonates in the artistic practices of artists Gisèle Tchitchiama, Yasmina Viale-Fraine, and other special guests, moderated by artist / curator Merryn Trevethan. They will chat about how our multiple identities and experiences manifest in what we create and become, and how ideas of presence and absence illuminate our journeys into inner and outer landscapes.
