Renowned French cellist Didier Petit’s inspiration for this string quartet of Chinese and European master musicians comes in part from a concerto by a monastic composer from the early 18th century (Teodorico Pedrini, Baroque Concert At The Forbidden City, Astrée). At that time, improvisation and modality were common western musical practice. As well, Chinese culture was very popular in Europe. This music inspired Didier to look for a chance to have a contemporary cross-cultural music ensemble, one that would embrace Chinese tradition, and western improvisation.
Xu Fengxia and Wu Na are masters of Chinese musical culture, and they are also experienced in western improvised forms, so they were natural choices for this project, and double-bassist Peter Scherr has collaborated with Mr. Petit on other projects, always with dazzling results.
Petit’s vision of “massive material musique” will give rise to a thrilling performance: stately arcs of Chinese melody, driven by the joyous spontaneity of western improvisation. This will be one of the most fascinating musical events of the spring season. Definitely do not miss!
